*:·゚✧ series masterlist | previous part!
pairing *:·゚ afab!reader x joel miller wc *:·゚2.6k an *:·゚so excited to continue with this series! i swear, i love each new installment more than the last. writing this has also given me more joel ideas, so i have a few wips that i'm bouncing between too that i'll hopefully post soonish :3 this is slightly edited, but if anything jumps out please let me know! comments and reblogs are always deeply appreciated! check the series masterlist for the series tags!
synopsis *:·゚ there's a dance night in jackson, and joel doesn't leave you hanging.
"i swear if we're late to this dance, i'm gonna be pissed." ellie's voice travels to your ears over the wind as she yanks you down the main street of jackson. in the distance, you could see that the patio near the tipsy bison had been set up once again; string lights crisscrossing their way overhead, with potted plants and wooden tables littering the sides, leaving the middle open as a makeshift dance floor.
you couldn't help but laugh as you picked up your pace, looping your arm through hers and continuing to head down the street. "ellie, hun. you're the one who requested i touch up your haircut five minutes before we were set to leave. i don't know what you want me to tell you." you knew defending yourself to her was pointless, though; once ellie had it in her head, that was it. if she thought it was your fault y'all were running late to the dance, then it was clearly your fault for taking so long to cut her hair.
as if proving your point, you heard her mutter, "as if that's my fault," under her breath while she ran her free hand through her now shorter locks. she had decided last minute that she wanted it cut just above her shoulders, especially with the summer heat already moving into wyoming. the look suited her, accentuating her sharp features while still making her look young. you were pretty proud of the job you did, regardless of if it made you guys late.
by the time you reached the fence line surrounding the patio, ellie had already pulled free from your grip and made a beeline to the far corner, where you could see jesse and a few other people mulling about. you watched them all comment on her hair, which made you grin; partly because of your skills, but mostly because seeing her fit in with this community brought nothing but peace to your heart.
satisfied that ellie was good, you glanced around the layout, taking notice of the tables that had been set up with food and drinks. it was near that table that your eyes came across joel, who was standing off to the side with tommy and another man. he hadn't noticed you yet, so you took that moment to take him in.
he was still wearing his work boots, having come directly here after helping rebuild something on the farm, and his jeans were lightly streaked with spots of mud and dirt. you had to admit that they fit him quite nicely, though, biting down on your bottom lip while seeing the way the material stretched over his thighs. a casual dark grey t-shirt clung to his upper body, and his hair was slightly messy up top, as if he had been running his fingers through it.
damn, did he look good. you had half a mind to drag him out of the patio and head back to your house.
you refrained, though. instead, you decided to make your way near him. the movement caught his eye, and as soon as those big brown eyes landed on your figure, a grin spread across his face. he patted tommy on the shoulder, his gaze never leaving yours, and quickly moved to meet you halfway. you gave tommy a finger wave when he looked over his shoulder to see where his brother went, all while grinning as you watched joel's hand reaching out when you got near, landing to rest against your hip.
"well, hey there, sugar. almost thought you were playin' hooky tonight." joel muttered, leaning in to press a kiss against your cheek. he wasn't really one for the big public displays of affection, but he also liked to remind all of the other men in town that you were his. it was a balancing act that he excelled at. you could feel his thumb gently caress the curve of your hip, could feel his fingers dig into the material of the blue dress you had put on lightly as you stepped up closer to him.
"me? play hooky? i don't know where you'd get that idea from," you teased, leaning into his touch. it was no secret that you were more introverted than most people in town, choosing to skip out on the social events every once in a while, to stay home and read your books. truthfully, you only started going to these events more often to catch glimpses of joel after he first moved here.
you'd never tell him that, though. his ego was already too big with you around. "i'm late because ellie wanted me to touch up her hair last minute. she might be worse than i am with the whole time management thing." your voice was teasing, and joel's grin grew even wider.
"baby, don't shoot the messenger, but nobody is as bad as you are with the time management thing." he leaned down to kiss your forehead, chuckling to himself as you slapped his chest. his grip on your hip tightened ever so slightly, and you were reminded of your earlier thought of dragging him home and having your way with him. at that moment, however, your stomach decided to growl somewhat loudly.
the man at your side let out a snort as your face flamed with embarrassment. joel turned his body to the side, ushering you in front of him and began walking towards the tables spread out with food. "c'mon, misses always-on-time. let's get some food in that starvin' stomach of yours."
you happily obliged, slipping your arm around joel's back as you made your way to the refreshments. joel grabbed one of the plates, holding it out for you as you loaded it up with anything that looked remotely good. you made sure to get extras, too, because joel had a habit of snacking on your plate no matter where you were, despite him claiming to not be hungry every time. you grabbed a couple of the glasses that were set out as well, filling one with water and the other with the locally made whiskey joel liked.
he guided you to one of the tables, pulling out your chair with his free hand before gliding into the seat next to you. joel moved his seat ever so slightly closer to yours, his knee steadily brushing against yours as the two of you got settled. eventually, tommy and maria came to join the two of you, and you spent a good chunk of the night at that table; conversing about the future plans for jackson, commiserating with maria about how annoying the miller brothers could be, laughing at tommy's stories of the two of them before the outbreak.
sometime throughout the night, joel had slung his arm on the back of your chair, and you had moved to lean into his side, your hand resting on his upper thigh. his palm was planted on your shoulder, his thumb sneaking underneath the strap of your dress, occasionally gliding back and forth across your skin. he sipped his whiskey, and you noticed him checking on ellie every now and again, too.
tilting your head back, you took a moment to admire the man sitting next to you while his gaze was focused elsewhere. his skin was starting to get that summer tan again, and the hours of being out in the light had given his hair a few lighter streaks of color mixed in with the dark brown. his beard was growing in more fully too, though you could spot a few strands of grey peeking through here and there. the whiskey had warmed his cheeks, turning them light pink. for a brief moment, the suns setting rays hit joel's face just right, showcasing the different shades of brown within his eyes.
eventually, when the sun began to sink behind the mountains and the lights were flicked on, a few men crowed up on the side stage, each bearing different instruments. they started playing a chirpy tune, causing the crowd to holler in cheers as the dancing portion of the night started. tommy led maria away from the table, pulling her close and swaying her in the middle of the dance floor. it was always good fun, but tommy loved showing off his moves, so the couple was always at the center of attention.
you and joel sat comfortably together, your head resting against his shoulder as his thumb stroked away at your skin. joel has never been too big at participating in these events, happier to just sit on the sidelines and observe. you didn't really mind it either, as you weren't really a graceful dancer yourself and wanted to save yourself from potential embarrassment. so usually you two sat just like this, watching the community you've grown to love and accept as your own partake in the festivities.
joel's gruff voice interrupts your train of thought. "c'mon," he scoots his chair back, offering his hand towards you. with a shocked grin, you accept, letting him guide you from the table to the outskirts of the spot where people had gathered to dance. your eyes widened in surprise as his hands come to rest on your lower back, pulling you closer to him.
"joel miller, leading me to dance? you didn’t even make me beg," you tease, happily settling your hands on his shoulders, letting your fingers tickle the side of his neck. the begging was a tactic that wasn't totally necessary (joel would give you whatever you wanted the moment you asked for it) but usually, on the few chances you did want to dance, you had to rely on that method to soften him up.
"not this time,” he clicks his tongue, giving you a smirk. "although i will be havin’ you beg for somethin’ else a little later tonight, sugar."
your laughter rung out across the patio, causing joel to grin sheepishly as the sound drew more attention your way. his hands tightened in the material of your dress, and you had a feeling you would be paying for that brief moment in the spotlight later, but you didn't mind. the sky was filling with stars, lightning bugs floating around in the balmy night air, laughter spilling in with the music. you were surrounded by your friends, your family, and dancing with your man; you simply couldn't complain.
hours later, when the band grew tired of performing and most of the crowd had dispersed, it was decided that the night was over. joel had left earlier with ellie, who had managed to sneak a little too much alcohol that night and needed help getting back to his house, but you chose to stay and help maria and tommy clean up the patio. maria was packing up the rest of the food and taking trips to the tipsy bison every now and then, and you and tommy were on table cleaning duty.
you were in your own little world, smiling to yourself as you wiped down the tables and picked up the floral decor that maria had strewn about, feeling so content with the way that the night had gone. before he had left, you and joel had spent the rest of the night dancing together, hiding on the sidelines, talking about anything and everything. your feet were sore, and you knew joel would be complaining about his back later, but it was worth it to you.
"you sure have joel wrapped around your finger, don't ya?" tommy's voice pulled you out of your mind, causing you to jump a little at the suddenness of it. you both laughed as you righted yourself, cheeks flushed from his comment.
"well, i don't know about that. he's still a stubborn ass most of the time," you teased, helping tommy gather up the decor on the last few tables while you talked. he chuckled at your comment, taking a second to wipe down the surfaces before turning back to you.
"honey, he never would've stepped foot into somethin' like this before you. you're bringing him back to life." his face was serious, but his eyes - so similar to joel's - held nothing but mirth. you felt your heart stutter at his words, could feel the prickling behind your eyes from the impact of his words.
"i think i could say the same thing." your voice was quiet, fingers clinging into your rag at the admission. tommy nodded his head, reaching out to squeeze your shoulder as you wiped away the lone tear that strayed from your eye. it wasn't a lie, either. you were fine with your life in jackson before joel, sure. you had made friends, were easily accepted into the community. after so many years fighting to survive, you finally had a safe haven.
but you didn't know you were missing something until joel showed up. your relationship was rocky at the start; joel really didn't want anything to do with you, or any of the other members of the community. you couldn't blame him, after hearing his story. but somewhere along the line, as joel became more comfortable in town, you fell into a fast friendship that slowly turned into something more.
whenever you were with him, your soul felt settled; like you had finally found the other half of your heart. he brought a sense of calmness to you that you didn't think existed anymore, a sense of safety and security. he loved you in the way that you always dreamed about as a little girl, before the world turned; deeply, utterly, truly. and you could only hope that he felt the same with you.
"it feels real good to hear you say that about my brother. he doesn't talk much 'bout his feelings, but shit. every time you walk in his vicinity, he gets this goofy ass grin on his face. sometimes i don't even think he realizes he's doin' it, either. that speaks volumes, honey." tommy's fingers squeezed your shoulder once more before letting go, and you watched him gather up his bag of decorations and head over to maria. her laughter echoed through the night as he planted an obnoxious kiss on her cheek.
you let tommy's words settle into your mind, a rush of heady emotions flowing through your veins. you knew joel loved you, there was absolutely no doubt about that. but hearing that conformation from tommy, a man joel so clearly trusts and loves as well, was just everything to you. wiping your cheek once more, you move to clear off the last table, leaving your own bag of decorations by the entrance of the patio.
later, when you finally reached your house, you zeroed in on joel, who was finishing washing the dishes from lunch. without saying anything, you launched yourself on him, clinging to his back. your arms wrapped themselves around his middle, your cheek squished against his firm back. you could feel him chuckle, could hear him softly mutter, "what's this for?" while continuing to scrub away at the dishes.
instead of replying, you simply hummed, content against his back. that sense of security enveloped your heart, causing your eyes to fall shut as you tightened your grip around his waist. you heard him hum too, though you knew he was mocking you - he hated when you responded to him with sounds. he wasn't irritated, though. instead, he turned the water off, drying his hands on the towel you had next to the sink. he removed your hands from his middle, pushing you back slightly as he turned to face you.
joel moved your hands back around his waist, gathering you up in his arms. it was then, with his lips pressed against your forehead, your face buried in his grey shirt, his heartbeat steady in your ears, that you finally felt at home.

I really thought yesterday was a fever dream but sadly no. Tumblr did really change their layout in this ugly piece of sh.... in this stupid thing that nobody wanted because I didn´t see a single tiny user who said: "Oh tumblrs layout is shit, I´m only used to twitter, so I demand that tumblr is like that."
Why? Just why? There are so many other things you can works on. F.e. your support. XDD After five mails I don´t have my energy to explain again and again what my problem is only to get the same answer: "Restart your router, delete your cash from the app (uhm yeah nice but I use tumblr mostly on my desktop)"
Oh it´s so annoying. Also don´t do this stupid games. What´s up with these "Following, mutal..." buttons on my followers, following people or in general users. Didn´t you think that it can pressure people? I can only speak for myself but I´m a person who sometimes unfollows people quiet and do not wanna talk about it but now people can see it and this is so unpleasant. Because it supports drama. Give us a possibility to deactivate it.
Also, I already said it to you in mails: Work on this stupid tag bug. You have a specific name for it, SO YOU KNOW THE PROBLEM!!! It can´t be that people who are years and years on this site have this tag problem over and over again where they post something and you can´t see it for hours in the tags.
Then there are these ask bugs. When I started with tumblr it was a funny joke that sometimes an ask was eaten, but after these many years (it´s a decade) we can demand that you have finally fixed it. But you didn´t, instead we get so many playful things ... for what?
Oh another thing: it´s so nice that you tried to explain why the new editor is better but it is clumsy. At one point it is really hooky, so I don´t know what you have tested all these months but this editor has serious problem and is way worse than the old editor. In the old one I could upload 4 and more gifs at once and easily move them around, now I feel like I am wasting my time when I upload every single gif for itself and move it. Also, I don´t wanna ignore the fact that the quality on every gif is downgraded but people already explained that in long and very good texts.
Then there is the thing that you always try to explain to us that all these new feature are good for us. Like... are you not seeing the opinions of all the users on this site? I can totally understand when people say, that they are feel ignored because it´s true. You have a feature and you play with your words and say: "Oh you wanted to have it, here look this is amazing." Because you are so proud of your ideas that you forget that people were happy with the old tumblr. Nobody asked for live streams (i don´t have it because silly me lives in europe but I´m scared that i will get it at one point and i feel so sorry for all the ones who have it).
Yesterday I saw a little snippet of a text in which you explained that tumblr is too difficult to use? Like the fuck? Tumblr is so easy you have literally a whole tutorial in which you explain the basics, did you forget that? Or are you suggesting that people do not read anymore?
My head is empty now but I know that there are a lot more problems I didn´t name. (@staff)
Oh btw if you don´t know what I wanted to say with this post, then I´ll just say it in simple words now: start listening to your users.

Being bound to the schedule of a teenager wasn't the best thing for Batman, Terry will be the first to admit. Having heard about the incident at the University while on the way to class from his lunch break, there was nothing he could do to go help without playing hooky. Which wasn't something he could really get away with, given his record.
Already, based on the name he heard on the report, Terry knew he would be a busy little bat once school let out. The anticipation made the rest of the day drag on, to be honest. Crane. It was a name well known to many Gothamites. And one he especially was familiar with, given that he was told often about the old man's past encounters with criminals. Sure enough, as soon as he could contact Bruce, Terry was given the suggestion to go pay the other old timer a visit. Truthfully, he wasn't sure what to expect as he made his way there, once he was suited up. Thankfully, Terry was well acquainted with the care center's layout, thanks to previous check ups he did on Carter.
Wayne transmitted images and reports to Terry so he could absorb all of the details in regards to the incident and Crane himself. He hadn't seen what the guy currently looked like until now. It was a bit shocking, how much he just didn't look the way he'd expected. As for taking out those goons? Well he saw Bruce do something similar before so that part didn't surprise him as much.
There was no way the health care officials would let Batman or Terry see Crane if he asked, so into stealth mode he went. Bruce occasionally made observations about the way he was going, but otherwise preferred to watch the feed from the suit.
As he passed them, Terry noted that many of the staff near Crane's room made idle chit chat about how strange it was that the man kept asking to be locked away. And then talk about how the doctors said to give him some space when one nurse thought out loud about visiting him, since he was kind of like a celebrity.
Good. That meant he had plenty of time to check in on the old guy himself, without worrying about being interrupted.
With practiced ease, the bat slipped into Crane's room undetected while a nurse quickly brought him some food and left. Looking at the man, even Terry could tell he wasn't quite all there at the moment. It was no wonder the doctors wanted him to have a little breathing room.
Bruce's warnings to be on guard echoed in Terry's ear. This used to be a formidable enemy of his, and Bruce surmised that Crane may be suffering from at the very least, mild hallucinations. Those warnings did not fall on deaf ears, the Bat readied himself mentally to do anything he had to if something went wrong.
Uncloaking himself, the pitch black silhouette of Batman became visible once more. From this angle, he towered over the man in the bed. Terry's voice was kept at it's usual 'Batman' tone, but there was the hint of his playfulness sneaking in.
"You're not gonna be scaring any birds in that condition."
SABBATICAL.
@2ndbat Professor Jonathan Ichabod Crane wasn't exactly the most popular man in Gotham City. He had the respect of his students, his colleagues... and a few of his former criminal compatriots. Every now and then, his mind drifted to the Society - had Luthor finally kicked the bucket? Had Grodd found his secret to immortality? Were either of them still there? It really didn't matter, except to illustrate the depths he had once sunk to - and the depths that clawed at him once again. Bodies littered the lobby of the Humanities and Sociology building of Gotham University, most of them broken beyond recognition, but still somehow breathing. The sixty-eight year old professor wields his cane with the dexterity and grace of someone four decades younger, and cracks skulls with as much precision as a surgeon. By the time the authorities cleaned up the other buildings, Crane was left in the lobby, surrounded by the unconscious bodies of gangsters, wheezing and collapsing against his cane. His once blue overcoat was now a deep red, and as police flocked to him to check his condition, he reflexively holds his hands out, waiting for restraints. The restraints never come. Instead, he is met with only confusion, except for from a vaguely familiar face. The commissioner, Barbara Gordon. "Crane." Her voice is laced with what feels like venom, but she keeps her gaze level. He can barely speak, his lungs screaming in protest as he does so regardless. "Arkham. Take me... to Arkham."
Crane would soon find, of course, that Arkham had been demolished. He remembered, of course - destroyed, after what happened with Joker. Still, he was going to the next best place, the Leslie Thompkins Medical Center. They still didn't put handcuffs on him. He was just defending himself and his students, or so they said - but he could feel the shadows at the corners of his vision coming alive once more. The police cruiser stops outside the hospital, and Crane steps out, leaning heavily on his cane. The officers who guide him in are gentle - they don't drag him. He realizes it must be because of his bruised body. They'll have time for the handcuffs later. Where was the Batman? And that pesky bird that always followed him? "Fools." He snarls, under his breath. "Fools, all of you. You think I cannot harm you, because I am old? I am the Master of Fear, the Lord of Terror! When I tell you to restrain me-" His words seem to fall on deaf ears and he huffs a bit more, but doesn't bother. After a visit with a doctor who is more concerned with his body than the fact that Crane could kill him with a single blow, he finally gets a cell. They had to be convinced (did they wish for him to just sleep outside?), but he finally got it, along with a set of warm, fresh clothes. The TV (why was there a TV in his cell) is set to the news, and, predictably, they're covering tonight. "-University found itself attacked by a gang of Jokerz, though casualties were minimalized thanks to the heroic efforts of Psychology Professor Jonathan Crane." Was she joking? There was nothing heroic about what he had done. He can feel the end approaching - it was only a matter of time before he relapsed completely. His vision was fading, the old burlap monster returning.

Part 2!
I... completely forgot to post this oops. Starting to regret splitting this up into multiple parts
Oliver is from The Kiss Bet by @ingridcomics on Instagram! The Kiss Bet is one of my favorite romances on Webtoons currently and it’s just so wholesome! It has very similar vibes to Hooky when it comes to the wholesomeness overall.
I really enjoy the art style and story and if you’re looking for another romance then I definitely recommend it!
If you have already read The Kiss Bet, who’s your favorite character?

I am willing to try any animated source requested (under my comfortability), just be specific because I won’t know much about the characters. I also might do a limited number of edits since it isn’t one of my sources (like 3 icons instead of 9). Also, for any of the edits only sources I am willing to do kin matchups and normal matchups as well. Here is also information on webtoon sources.
I also now have an other sources list for extended sources! This is for sources I know and enjoy and don’t mind making edits for, but they aren’t my fave or maybe I really like them but don’t know a lot about them. You can find the list and information for that here!

Family day playing hooky hc
(this turned into another fic. Apparently I don't make the rules anymore)
Read on AO3
It's the beginning of a long summer. Both kids are home - well, not really, since Amy has signed them up for several activities all around the city. Today is arts & crafts time at the children's library wing, Jake notes as he checks their shared calendar before the morning meeting. But they are home, insofar as Mac's school is closed for the summer holidays, and so's Maya's kindergarten. They drop them off at their daily activity in the morning, and the rest of the time they're at his mom's, who's been happily overfeeding them and entertaining them as the proud grandma she is. Or they drop them off at Gramma Peralta’s first, and she drives them to whatever place they were signed up at. It's a pretty good routine, and he's proud of Amy having found so many things for them to do that seem right up their alley, judging from their excited stories during dinner and the ever growing collection of handmade gifts on their living room shelves.
But they're home for the summer, and Jake and Amy have to sit at the sweltering precinct, slogging through paperwork and a dull week of almost no new cases. It's really not fair, Jake thinks. He remembers his summer days with Gina, when Nana would hand them both a couple of dollars and tell them not to be home until sunset at least. They can’t do that, obviously - Mac and Maya are still too young, and Brooklyn has definitely not gotten any safer since his early teens, when it was already questionably sketchy for him and Gina to stalk around the neighbourhoods and buy cheap ice cream and soda at random bodegas. He also remembers those few rare days when his mom would get a day off that did not need to be spent on catching up on housework, or when his dad would finally show up for more than one day and they could plan a little trip (which would actually take place at least 50% of the time). He remembers the aquarium and the zoo and the natural history museum and Central Park and Coney Island.
And they could absolutely do that, he realises, so the decision is pretty much made before he’s even set his bag down at his desk. But he’s patient enough to wait through the morning meeting - blessedly short, because nothing new has come up anyway, and they’re all told to finish up the paperwork and start on re-organising the evidence room. Jake supposes it’s a generally good thing that crime seems to slow down in the summer heat a little, but that’s not really why he’s so happy right now hearing the captain tell them to ‘find something to do anywhere’. He certainly knows what he wants to do already.
Amy’s morning meeting must’ve been just as short, because she’s already at her desk when he jumps down the last steps of the stairwell to her floor. Her uniformed officers mostly give him a quick nod or smile as he passes - it’s not a rare thing to see Detective Peralta come by to visit his wife outside of break times.
“Good morning, Lieutenant.” He smiles at her, and she rolls her eyes with fondness. The title is still pretty new, and he loves to remind her of it any chance he gets.
“Hey babe. We’re not due for lunch for another 4 hours, you know that, right?”
“Yeah there’s no way I’m waiting that long.” He’s still smiling wide, and when she looks up from whatever paper she’s been filling out, she instantly recognises that mischievous glint in his eye.
“What are you planning?”
“Let’s bail the kids out of the library and go somewhere fun. Coney Island? It’s all open since last saturday I think.”
“We have to work, Jake.” Amy levels him with one of those ‘please be a grown-up’ looks, but she knows they seldom get results.
“Do we, Ames? Do we really? Because Holt has us organising the evidence room. I have literally zero open cases on my desk. And how far ahead are you with all your paperwork and organisation?”
She looks sheepishly at the very small stack of papers on her desk.
“About two weeks, I’d say.”
“And you’re saying we can’t take one day off? Just one day of family time? Getting cotton candy and taking Mac on an actual roller coaster now that he’s tall enough and winning a new teddy for Maya because you’re an ace at the fake shooting range?” He wiggles his eyebrows for emphasis, and Amy stifles a snicker. It’s too bad her husband knows exactly how to win her over for most of his childish endeavours.
“I guess it wouldn’t be so bad to take some personal time right now. We’d still have to convince Holt-”
“On it.” Jake slaps her desk in excitement as he gets up, ready to race upstairs and sweet-talk Holt into giving them the day off (or rather, annoy him into it). Only Amy Santiago would request permission from her boss to play hooky, of course, but there’s no way he’s not going to indulge her.
It’s not even fifteen minutes later that he’s back downstairs, his bag already on his shoulder, almost pulling her out of her chair.
“Got the go-ahead, so let’s go!”
“Give me five minutes at least to brief Gary, and change out of my uniform before I leave.”
He sighs and thrums his fingers across his thigh, but obediently watches her talk to her ‘own Amy’, eagerly taking notes about the few things they actually have to remember to do. He refrains from pushing her forwards by the shoulders as she heads to the locker room, deciding to pack up her purse instead (he knows the layout perfectly by now - the calendar and pen goes next to the baby wipes, and the glasses case has to be by the little box of healthy, kid-friendly snacks). But the moment she returns in one of her signature flowery blouses, he grabs her hand and drags her out of the precinct so fast she can barely protest.
-+-
The drive to the library is equally as quick. Amy only manages to slow him down once they step into the actual building, reminding him of the library rules of being quiet and calm.
“Lieutenant Santiago!” The librarian behind the desk greets her - she’s well-known around these parts, obviously. “Back so early? Isn’t your mother-in-law picking up the kids later?”
He should probably call her to tell her about the change of plans, Jake thinks as Amy explains and asks if it’s possible to get Mac and Maya packed up and ready to leave already.
It’s absolutely possible, of course, and Maya proudly shows them the pipe cleaner and yarn figurine she’d just finished making as the kids librarian leads them out to the main floor. Mac, a few feet behind her, seems wary as he hugs them hello.
“Did something happen?” He asks into the hug, quietly, and Jake remembers with a twinge in his heart that the last time someone picked him up unexpectedly early from football practice, it was aunt Rosa, taking him and Maya to the precinct until Amy brought Jake back from hospital after getting knifed by a perp.
“No, buddy, this is a good surprise.” He hugs him back extra tight, ruffling his hair for good measure, and silently cursing his line of work being so shit sometimes.
Mac smiles back at him, luckily, but there is still a bit of hesitation in his eyes, and Jake’s excitement about his own idea of playing hooky falters for the first time. Maybe they should’ve just let the kids enjoy their crafts and grandma-time, and planned a proper day out for the weekend-
“Grandpa Holt gave us today off.” Amy explains as she steps up to the two of them with Maya by her side, and that title still sounds a little weird even years later. “So we thought we could all go out for a fun day at Coney Island!”
The squeal Maya lets out certainly changes Mac’s smile for the better, even as it is quickly shushed down (they’re still in the library after all!), and they’re soon dragged outside to the car by their kids the same way Jake had dragged Amy out of the precinct.
“C’n we get hotdogs?” Maya asks as she clicks her seatbelt closed and Amy smiles at her through the rearview mirror.
“We sure can!”
“Can we go on all the rides?” Mac joins in, and Jake is glad to see there’s absolutely no hesitation on his face anymore.
“All the ones you’re old enough for, sure.”
The questions and cheers and excited chatter keep up during the whole drive, even as Amy calls Karen and barely gets a word in, between the happy interruptions shouted from the backseat, and it takes a lot more to actually keep them together as they step on the boardwalk, Maya already running left to some game parlour while Mac races on ahead to the first ride he sees.
-+-
The rest of the day does not slow down in their whirlwind. Mac decides after three roller coasters that maybe he’s had enough (and Jake is glad they didn’t go through the food stalls before it), but he spins Maya around in the teacups ride like only an older brother could. The ice cream after is well deserved, seeing how sweaty and exhausted they are already, and gives them more than enough energy to hit literally every game they can see. Jake can watch Amy calculating the vast amount of money they’re spending in tokens, but she’s also the first one in line once they reach the toy-shooting range, winning Maya a unicorn plushie and Mac a knock-off superb-man figurine (his wife is a goddamn sharpshooter and he’d be lying if that wasn’t a turn-on). The third shot earns him a wacky pair of sunglasses that make both Amy and Maya giggle in that way he loves the most, and he refuses to take them off for any of the silly pictures they take in front of cutouts, wall art and weird statues.
He’s pushed them up into his hair by the time they get hotdogs (3 for him, 2 for Mac, one each for Amy and Maya), because the sun is already starting to set and he can barely see. Maya begins to shiver as they stroll down the quieter parts of the boardwalk, so he buys her one of those kitschy animal-hoodies all the stalls are touting (they know their clientele too well), and of course Mac immediately needs one too, so now there’s a tiny tiger and a slightly larger dragon running in front of them with cotton candy sticking all over their hands and faces.
Amy slides her arm around his waist as they slow their steps a little to let the kids go ahead, and he lays his across her shoulder as she leans into him.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had more fun playing hooky.” She mumbles, and Jake laughs for a second.
“Amy Santiago, are you telling me you’ve played hooky before? I am shocked. Here I thought I’d married an upstanding girl.”
He gets a soft punch to his side for that before she leans back and whispers.
“Actually, you’ve made me play hooky before, remember? But we didn’t exactly go to an ‘amusement park’…”
“And yet you’re saying this has been more fun. I see where I stand.” He pouts before grinning again, and leans down for a soft kiss. (He definitely remembers the last time they played hooky now.)
“Sorry, babe.” Amy smiles as she looks at Mac and Maya again, currently busy chasing each other and dueling with the sticks left over from their cotton candy. “But this has been such a great day.”
“Yeah, it’s gonna make for one hell of a memory, I hope.” He follows her eyes forward, thinking about that short moment with Mac at the library earlier today. Amy hadn’t heard it, he’s sure, but the look on her face as she pulls him to look at her with a hand on his cheek tells him she knows his thoughts well enough.
“Hey. No sad thinking allowed on such a fun day, okay? We had a great time today and we’re gonna have so many more great days in the future.” She’s still smiling, swiping her thumb across his bottom lip, where he’s sure some cotton candy is still left clinging. “We could take them to the zoo next week.”
“Santiago!” He gasps again. “Are you insinuating-”
“On the weekend.” She leans up to kiss away the last bit of sugar on his mouth. “Like the upstanding girl you married would do, obviously.”
He laughs into the kiss even as he pulls her closer, and it’s only Mac and Maya, running back to them with news of another stand they’ve discovered selling funnel cakes, that makes them break apart again.
-+-
Later, after Jake’s carried a sleepy Maya up to their apartment, and she and Mac have barely had enough energy left in them to brush their teeth and wash their faces free from all the grime and sugar that’s covering it, he falls down on the couch as Amy checks on them one more time to see both fast asleep before the lights are even out.
“Do you feel as tired as the kids?” She says in her deep, sing-song voice that sends goosebumps up his spine, just as much as her hand raking through his hair does as she stands behind the couch.
“Well, it’s been a pretty long day. But I do have more sugar in my system to keep me running, I guess.” He tries to sound nonchalant, but then she leans down to nip on his ear and ‘nonchalance’ is the last thing he’s thinking of.
“Then how about we save time between now and bed by showering together?” She whispers, and he lets his head drop back to actually look at her.
“We have never saved time in the shower together, babe.”
She only smiles at him while humming an M-hm before heading for the bathroom, and he definitely doesn’t waste any time following her.

I am slowly, slowly ticking things off my crochet to-do list.
Well, it’s less of a list and more of a ‘argh must do this, must finish that, must sort out ALL of that’, so maybe I actually ought to start a list, and then I might feel less swamped?
Anyway, things are Progressing. Some of them in terms of actually sitting down and hooking things, and some just in terms of getting organised with writing up blurbs/tweaking pattern layouts/sorting photos. Big things are Happening! Soon! All of which require me to activate brain and focus.
In actual hooky projects, I am doing quite nicely, but still seem to have three projects on the go at the moment. I finished one project (of which more below), but started another one fairly quickly. Oops? I never used to like having more than one project on the go at once, but one way or another I’ve ended up having three at once for some weeks now. I’m not feeling overwhelmed by it, though, so I’m not complaining about it!
My next blanket design is going apace. It’s an interesting experiment for me, a centre-out blanket. I’ve not designed one before, though I’ve crocheted other people’s patterns, and one of the reasons for this is that I have always designed in one colour (for Special DK, I use ‘silver’ as my design colour) before I come to work up the designs in the right colours. This has always felt a really comfortable way of designing: sorting out the pattern, textures and shapes before I tackle combining the colours. With blankets composed of different squares, this is sensible – I can design each square, and then work up the multiples in the right colours.
But with a centre-out blanket, this didn’t really seem feasible. I’d end up doing two whole blankets! So, for the first time, I’m working in colour at the same time as working on the design. It is…..tricky. Not impossible, but tricky. I find myself ripping out rounds because I haven’t quite managed to get the increases right. But it’s looking gorgeous, and I’m generally pleased with how it’s coming out. It’s about 23″ in diameter at the moment, and I reckon I’m aiming for about 45″ in total. We shall see 😀 I’m determined to keep it as a circle, because squaring off a larger blanket is a challenge I’m not entirely sure I want to face this time around!
This design came about because of a project I started in the summer, on a really awful hot day (38.6C here in Cambridge!!) when I couldn’t bear to work in anything except cotton. I picked up some balls of Classique Cotton DK that I had and just began experimenting. ‘Yarn doodling’, as it were. It started off as a sort of mandala, and then I turned it into a cover for a rather battered-looking stool that I have in my bedroom.
I think I got this out of a skip fifteen-odd years ago, and it’s definitely seen better days. So! A nice cover was required, and cotton is a good, sturdy material to use for it.
Ta da! One stool cover, custom made to fit my stool, with buttons and loops to fasten it around the four legs of the stool. I’m very pleased with it, if I do say so myself.
Let’s have a look at it off the stool.
It starts off circular, then becomes more squarish, and then finally contracts again, so it isn’t too loose underneath the stool. And buttons! I had a lovely half an hour of rummaging through my button box to find the perfect buttons for this. Because, as you know, I do love a good rummage in my button box. Buttons, buttons, buttons 😀 😀
I do have a pattern written up for this cover, but the design – particularly in terms of shaping and the final rounds of decreases – is very specific to this stool, so I haven’t written it up neatly or anything. If anyone does fancy the pattern for it, let me know. It would need adjusting for different sizes of stool, but as a starting point it would probably help.
Anyway! This is what started me off on a circular blanket, because it seemed to me that actually, this was a challenge I would a) like to attempt and b) could probably succeed at. That’s the best kind of challenge, really.
The blanket doesn’t use all the pattern that I scribbled up for the stool cover, but it definitely starts off in the same place, and my confidence has definitely been bolstered by seeing that at least on a small scale, I can design straight onto colour.
Staying flat, though, in a bigger blanket – that’s my current challenge. Increasing neither too much nor too little, making sure my lovely textured stitches create texture rather than just crumpled-looking fabric, etc. I’ll get there! And the journey is fun. But it’s definitely challenging in different ways to designing in grey for a pieced blanket.
As for all the other exciting things I’m working on – watch this space! Particularly watch this space next Wednesday (13th Nov) for the first of the Exciting Things!
(I’m being such a tease. Mwahahaha!)
To-do list and a little ‘ta da!’ I am slowly, slowly ticking things off my crochet to-do list. Well, it's less of a list and more of a 'argh must do this, must finish that, must sort out ALL of that', so maybe I actually ought to start a list, and then I might feel less swamped?

AMERICA PART 4!
TROCADERO, PHILADELPHIA
Our last train ride is a great one. It is such an enjoyable way to travel along with beautiful scenery all the way. Arrive much less stressed and this hall is an old favourite. We are visited by many friends tonight, Pete Pacifico, Steve Garvey (Buzzcocks old bass player) plus family, our two Policeman friends Shaun and ????, and many, many others. I am overwhelmed, a great gig!
Guess what? Yep! ‘Sold Out’ too. I had to do a runner again, afterwards people…tired out. Up early still bleary eyed for an early flight to…….
SINCLAIR, CAMBRIDGE
Only good thing is we are very close to Boston, so the trip doesn’t take long. Historically over the 6 years we have been playing as The Light, we have not done very well in this town, so I am intrigued about this evening. Grab a laundry run and yours truly is pristine again, clean and sparkley….and all for $2!
A bloody bargain. When I get there tonight turns out to be so different from our usual, ‘Sold.Out’, brilliant!
A nice space this gig and another great concert ensues (This is getting boring to report;). In a lovely way I have to say. Great gig from start to finish and Cambridge is a beautiful district, my driver was an ex-policeman here and regales me with lurid tales of Boston’s underworld on our trip….Fascinating but not as bad as Manchester;)
FAIRMONT THEATRE, MONTREAL
Back to the bloody airport again sadly, but it’s smooth and we are staying in one of my favourite hotels in the world. ZERO ONE!
Grab a great ‘noodle ramen’ in Chinatown on arrival, then an old man’s nap beckons. It’s cold here at last. The Fairmont is an old cabaret club, and I think the perfect layout for a concert. Small but ‘Sold Out’ ages ago! We are greeted mightily and the warmth and enthusiasm blows me away, from start to finish. What a great crowd. ‘The best yet!’ says Pottsy!
DANFORTH MUSIC HALL, TORONTO
Quick flight to Toronto, and we are staying here for two nights to finish off our North American Tour. I am ready for home now, never mind South America. I have hardly had a day off for 4 months, but it has been great …all of it! Apart from the ‘Legals’ bit of course, which has been particularly harrowing this month;(
It is unseasonably warm here too? God knows what we are leaving behind for you kids?…the world seems in an awful state. Ah well! Squeeze in a wonderful steak dinner in one of Toronto’s oldest restaurants, the aptly named Barberians, which is famed for it’s huge wine cellar, thousands of bottles some worth over $30,000. All housed in a nuclear Bomb Proof basement accessible only by high tech fingerprint technology. The Manager turns out to be an old New Order fan so I get a guided tour. It is wild, cost 1.5 million dollars to build. But I suppose if your going to go, there is no better companion than fine wine;) It is available for private hire if you’re interested? Early night beckons and next day I make the most of the Hotel’s facilities, The Grand has a great pool and gym, and with only the Chef skiving off to keep me company, I get a great workout. I have actually managed to keep heart and soul and fitness together…so thank you lord;)
Gig time rolls round and after some very tardy sushi, I am ready.
Danforth is a great theatre but really suffers from no side fills, for the onstage sound. I remember it as a huge problem last time. Tonight is ‘Sold Out’ again and if you are interested (again!). Toronto holds the record for giving New Order it’s biggest EVER concert audience at The C.N.E. Grandstand in 1987, 33,000 people. Thank you T, a hell of an achievement. Tonight’s gig is special from the word go and the boys, regenerated by a visit from Coatsey, another of the world’s greatest roadies, from Manchester originally now moved to better climes, so he says.
A legend in his own lunchtime! I had him for a good while in 2000 and we shared many adventures;) New Order flies by and then Joy Division flashes too. I am sad to see them go, and as I grab a fag outside alone on the stairs, I smile to myself with what we have achieved. A hell of a tour indeed!
Thank you the people of America and Canada for making an old man very happy. I have met some wonderful people and at this difficult point in my professional career, your support is much appreciated;)

A Romance Made In Heaven (Component.
In these times, that's not all also uncommon to find women formulating the most innovative techniques to ask a boy out. Everyone enjoys a favor and if you tell your lover one thing that you really like regarding them, it creates blaspheming quite effortless. Hanako San is an Eastern urban myth about the feeling from a younger The second world war age girl that devoted self-destruction due to harassing that now possesses university bathrooms. The small models are a good choice for the American Female Dolls, Julie and Ivy. The most effective aspect of this loved ones friendly party suggestion is actually that you can easily participate in any kind of video game (or video games you yearn for). Clothing from popular folks are actually certainly not simply prominent, they are relatively effortless to assemble.
